It’s fair to say that Suicide Squad hasn’t gone down well amongst critics, with Jared Leto’s Joker receiving much of the stick.
Although we actually rather liked it, most critics have slammed DC’s latest film; with its average score on Rotten Tomatoes now sitting at just 33%. Many of those critics have taken to twitter to, in particular, express their disappointment in Leto’s portrayal of The Joker:
Jared Leto is an anagram of "pulls stunts to distract from not being fit to stand in the shadow of Heath Ledger's Joker"

Suicide Squad: Jared Leto's greatest prank was forgetting to give a performance.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie were great. Viola Davis was kicked butt. I am not a fan of Leto's Joker. At all. #SuicideSquad

Harley & Deadshot stole the show w/ their chemistry Loved seeing Will Smith back in action But Leto's JimCarrey Joker ? #SuicideSquad (2of2)

#SuicideSquad was….not that great. Some fun moments. Leto and Robbie were very blah.

It was revealed that during production, Leto prepared for his role in quite bizarre fashion. As he gave his fellow cast members several horrific gifts, including a dead pig, used condoms and anal beads. He even met with “psychopaths and people who had committed horrendous crimes.” to inhabit the role of The Joker. Well many critics were expecting much more from the actor after the extreme lengths he went to, as well as more screen-time:

So they had to put up with all that shit from Jared Leto for THAT fucking performance?

Also, for all of the on-set antics Jared Leto put his castmates through … he was not threatening or creepy or unnerving.

Earlier, director David Ayer responded to the negative reviews:
Zapata quote is my way of saying I love the movie and believe in it. Made it for the fans. Best experience of my life. ❤️

But fans can make their own minds up on the film and Leto’s performance when Suicide Squad hits theaters on Friday.
