Will a Black Widow stand-alone ever make it to the big screen?

Marvel are at the very top of their game right now but in the next few years their stocks are set to expand even more with the impending release of some of their biggest titles yet: this year we have the triple-whammy of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok; and in 2018 we will see the Black Panther stand-alone film as well as the first “part” of Avengers: Infinity War. If you’re a comic-book fan, these are the years to treasure.

But one film that many Marvel fans would love to see is a stand-alone film involving Black Widow, the character played by Scarlett Johansson in five films thus far. But right now the studio has bigger fish to fry, but the actress hasn’t given up hope just yet and told Total Film that she remains hopeful:

“I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it… We’re creatively really compatible.

“I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone. It’s just a case of timing at this point, for both Marvel and myself. Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. I have a lot of things that I’m developing.”

Whether we will ever see the film remains to be seen, and a lot could depend on the success of Captain Marvel, the other new stand-alone film on the horizon which will star Oscar Winner Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. However if it does materialise, Johansson says she will give it everything, saying:

“If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing.. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it. And I don’t know if I have the capacity for it, or if Marvel has the capacity for it.

“I think if the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably…. It’d have to be done the right way, though. It’d really have to be its own standalone and its own style and its own story. But there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it. It could be just brutal and awesome.”

Johansson’s new film, Ghost In The Shell, is released on March 31st.
