Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed and Michelle Williams. Doesn’t sound like a comic book movie, does it? Especially one based on a character we’ve only seen appear in Sam Raimi’s poorly received Spider-Man 3. Nevertheless, Sony has outdone us all, they’re really going for it with this one. Venom starts shooting today and the first image of Tom Hardy on set has been released on Twitter.

Despite it’s more than a commendable cast of Oscar and Emmy nominees, the response for the project has been timid from fans. It just feels as if there’s some sort of mist surrounding the production, even though there’s really nothing going wrong. Pre-production has been smooth, actors haven’t been jumping off the ship and directors aren’t being fired. But somehow, the excitement just isn’t quite there. There’s been some apprehension due to Sony’s reluctance to set the film in the MCU. They say that it will in no way connect to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Homecoming – which is disappointing but it does allow an air of freedom. Ruben Fleisher (Zombieland) is directing a screenplay by Kelly Marcel (50 Shades of Grey, Saving Mr.Banks).
Venom is set for October 2018 release.
