Christian Bale has given us some outstanding performances over his long career, whether it was his debut in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun or as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. But to many he is, and always will be, remember for his portrayal as the Dark Knight – Batman.

Bale wore the cowl in all three Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, 2005’s Batman Begins, 2008’s The Dark Knight and the concluding part, The Dark Knight Rises, in 2012. But since then Batman has been reinvented once again in the form of Ben Affleck’s older, more world-weary Caped Crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the upcoming Justice League and The Batman.

But for Bale, his love affair with the superhero ended when his run came to a close and hasn’t sought out seeing any of the new versions. Speaking to Collider whilst promoting his new film, The Promise, the star said he hasn’t seen any comic-book film for a while, saying:

“I’m not interested in doing that… I’ve never seen — I’m trying to think if that’s correct, I think I’m actually correct, I can’t remember a single superhero film that I’ve ever watched. Apart from the ones I made, and like, the Christopher Reeve ‘Superman’ films.”

The Promise, directed by Terry George and co-starring Oscar Isaac (X-Men: Apocalypse), is in cinemas on Friday; Justice League opens on November 16th.
