Ryan Reynolds says he was “pretty much unhirable” after Green Lantern.

He may have starred in one of the biggest hits of the year with Deadpool but his previous superhero incarnation almost saw an end to his acting career.

Speaking on Variety’s Actors on Actors, Reynolds revealed the struggles he had after Green Lantern flopped:

“I represented the death of the superhero for a while. After Green Lantern, I was pretty much unhirable.”

He then expressed his relief that Deadpool came along, proving to be the perfect fit for the canadian actor:

Deadpool was one of those things that was just so specific–it was like this weird superhero anarchy that I loved so much,” he said. “I think I was in the superhero suit more in the marketing materials than I was in the actual film. Which is
why I stole the suit at the end of production and just brought it home with me.”

Reynolds will portray Deadpool once again in the upcoming sequel. Although the original’s director, Tim Miller was dismissed from the film over “creative differences” and will therefore be replaced with John Wick’s David Leitch.

Deadpool 2 is yet to get a release date.
