Sony look to continue their comeback from the devastating hacking scandal of last year with news emerging of a different take on their hottest property.

New studio chairman Tom Rothman announced that Phillip Lord and Chris Miller are to create a new animated movie based on Spider-Man. The duo, who scored a huge hit with The Lego Movie last year, are themselves in big demand, and have a number of animated and live action projects in development.

The announcement came as a surprise to most industry experts, with the lucrative franchise previously thought to be in line for another live-action reboot. Although The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to set critical pulses racing, the film was still a commercial hit. The muted reaction to it had more to do with the runaway success Marvel are having with their own superhero films.

With those factors in mind, Spider-Man is due to appear in some capacity in future Marvel movies after Sony reached out to the rival studio. However, Rothman clarified that this animated project was still part of Sony’s own continuity arc for the web-slinger. He said:

“The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.”

Its worth mentioning that Joss Whedon recently debunked rumours that the character is featured in a post-credit sting at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Lord and Miller are currently working on various Lego-centric projects for Warner Bros. as well as another sequel to their hit remake of 21 Jump Street.

The as-yet-untitled Spider-Man animated movie is set for release in summer 2018.
