Chris Evans doesn’t know if he will be Captain America after Avengers 4…

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to go from strength to strength and this year we are being treated to three films that continue the franchise in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. Indeed filming has already begun on the next big MCU team-up, Avengers: Infinity War, but one Avenger doesn’t know if he will be back after the final big showdown has finished.

Captain America star Chris Evans is coming to the end of his Marvel contract, which is due to expire after Avengers 4 is completed ready for its 2019 release. And rumours surfaced last week that the actor may well be walking away once his time has come to an end – but the actor has spoken out about the news and told Collider that he is open to more movies. Evans said:

“It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘No more.’… I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better… It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing.”

“The system is sound, over there. They make great movies…If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion… But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold. And like I said, I love the character… The only reason it would end is ‘cause my contract is up. After Avengers 4, my contract is done.”

Evans also stated that while he would be keen to discuss the idea of continuing as Cap, it would ultimately be Marvel’s call, saying:

“Talk to Marvel. If we engage further, I’d be open to it. I love the character.

“It’s almost like high school. You certainly always look to senior year, and then, all of a sudden, senior year happens and you’re like, ‘I don’t know if I’m ready to go.’ It’s tough thinking about not playing the guy.”

The fate of the MCU after Infinity War and its sequel is slightly up in the air as one of three things could potentially happen: the whole series is concluded and put on hiatus for a few years before a reboot; Captain America himself could stand down/be killed off like in the comics and see Evans replaced, or Evans will be kept on for another one or two movies and the series just continues along its path. With many of the “old guard” of characters, Marvel may use the opportunity to re-cast some of them and “refresh” the MCU into a new phase but more than likely Evans and co. will be kept on for more movies.

Avengers: Infinity War is released on April 27th, 2018, with Avengers 4 due on April 26, 2019.
