You’ve seen the newest trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse by now, and it’s by far the best of the lot. But the real icing on the cake, in the clip’s final moments, were the appearance of some familiar-looking adamantium claws. ‘We had some help’ explains Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops – and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine looks set to give them a lot of help. But director Bryan Singer has announced, while speaking with Empire, that as a mere cameo, ‘it’s not simple’.

What could he mean? ‘There’s something more pivotal that occurs with that,’ he continues. ‘It hints to a sequence that again fits within the canon of all six movies, and the birth of a new direction. It’s not insignificant, nor is it simply just a throw-in… It’s not the only shot you’re gonna see, let’s put it that way.’

Our immediate reaction to Singer’s words is to crack a huge smile across our face. After the time-warping events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, will this mean that Wolverine has a new origin? Will it also impact his third solo outing? Will his cameo be as memorable as that in X-Men: First Class? We only have a few more weeks until May 27 to find out what Singer truly means by ‘a new direction’.
