Avatar 2 is delayed

Looks like we’re going to have to cancel that return trip to Pandora: it’s just been revealed via The Wrap that the sequel to 2009’s box-office-smashing Avatar has been delayed, and will not be coming out in its intended Christmas 2017 spot.

There is one probable cause for this: Star Wars: Episode VIII being pushed from its original May 2017 release date into December 15, 2017 (with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales moving into its original spot). To be fair, Avatar 2 has been getting pushed back for what seems like years now; originally intended for 2014, then 2015 and even 2016, James Cameron has been teasing us all with the release date of the first in a brand new planned trilogy.

Ultimately, what does this mean? It means that both Rian Johnson – the Star Wars: Episode VIII director – and Cameron will get that precious amount of extra time to fine-tune their individual movies. Having said that, Cameron hasn’t yet revealed a new release date for Avatar 2: Christmas 2050, perhaps?
