Canadian filmmakers are planning to shoot a remake of Roger Moore’s 1981’s James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only.

Lee Demarbre and Ian Driscoll from Ottawa want to use Canada’s 50-year copyright limit to rework Ian Fleming’s short story, which was penned in 1960. The pair revealed their plans in an interview with CBC:

“When my grandfather died, I inherited his collection of James Bond paperbacks, and I started re-reading them. I stumbled across the short story For Your Eyes Only, in which Bond comes to Ottawa, and it flipped a switch in my head,” said Driscoll.

“It’s a no-brainer to bring Bond to Ottawa, because he’s this Cold War icon, and the Cold War started in Ottawa when Igor Gouzenko defected, and blew open the whole idea of stealing nuclear secrets and sleeper agents. That all happened when he was living in downtown Ottawa. So bringing James Bond back to the epicentre of the Cold War absolutely makes sense.”

They also said that they planned a more ‘art house’ Bond, rather than a big budget action style. As for the cast, they have Ryan Reynolds in mind to play Bond with Donald Sutherland, Christopher Plummer and Mad Men’s Jessica Paré as supporting cast.

“And for a villain, you can’t go wrong with Michael Ironside,” added Demarbre.

The pair have already directed projects including Mexican wrestling thriller The Dead Sleep Easy and comedy musical Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter but this would be their most high profile yet.
