The severe lack of Venom was just one of the many problems with Spider-Man 3. It looked like Sony Pictures may finally do Spidey’s fan favorite baddie justice in a spin-off. After The Amazing Spider-Man’s cinematic universe failed to take off, though, their Sinister Six movie and all other spin-offs were seemingly scrapped. Meanwhile, Sony teamed up with Marvel to have Spider-Man join the MCU in Captain America: Civil War.

Now, however, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the Venom spin-off is back on track. Dante Harper, who worked on rewrites for Edge of Tomorrow, is set to write the script. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who have produced numerous Spider-Man films, will helm the project.

What remains uncertain is whether this Venom spin-off will be a standalone film or part of the MCU like the upcoming Spider-Man reboot with Tom Holland.
