Star Wars: The Force Awakens has topped Avatar to become the highest grossing US domestic release of all time. According to Box Office Mojo, the domestic total gross for The Force Awakens now stands at $750,230,824. Avatar sits just below that with $749,766,139 (although it does have a domestic lifetime gross of $760,507,625, which includes Avatar: Special Edition‘s (2010) numbers too).
Of course, this is all relative, seeing as how we need to account for inflation when making true comparisons, but it leaves us wondering where Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to end up when all is said and done. The film is set to release in China this Saturday, although it is unlikely to enjoy quite so much success there, as the Star Wars franchise isn’t well known to the Chinese population. It therefore looks unlikely that The Force Awakens will go on to surpass Avatar as the highest grossing movie worldwide, as China is the second-largest movie market.
