The character Mon Mothma only had a minor role in previous Star Wars films. In the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, however, this revolutionary politician will serve a much greater purpose.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Mothma will have a major role in the Star Wars prequel, instructing Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Capt. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) to steal the Death Star plans. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Mothma will have a “significantly larger” part and will rise up as a leader “amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do.”

Mon Mothma was originally portrayed by Caroline Blakiston in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Genevieve O’Reilly played the character in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith and will reprise her role here.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
