It’s been almost ten years since Martin Scorsese’s The Departed won the Best Picture Oscar. Now Roy Lee, the film’s producer, has announced a television follow-up.

Lee informed Collider that a sequel to The Departed had previously been tinkered with, bringing back “characters who died in the original movie.” This idea eventually evolved into the idea for a TV series along the lines of FX’s Fargo.

The Departed as a concept is amazing. That’s what attracted me to the story, the two moles working on either side of the law, and translating that idea into other settings with new characters, like how Fargo has taken the feel of the Coen Brother’s film,” Lee said. “We were having discussions about making internal affairs a television series. A different city, so it’s not anything like The Departed, but essentially The Departed as a TV series.”

It’s still unknown when we might see this small screen adaptation, but writers are currently discussing whether the show would be better suited for network or cable channels. In any case, we could totally see The Departed working as a television show with the right people involved.
