Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim wasn’t the biggest domestic hit, barely crossing the $100 million mark in the US on a $190 million budget. The film earned back a majority of it’s production costs overseas, however, particularly raking in a ton of cash in China. This made leeway for the studio to sign off on a sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, though, Pacific Rim 2 is no longer a sure thing.

After reports of production delays, Legendary Pictures has halted production on the Pacific Rim sequel indefinitely. Originally planned for an August 2017 release, it’s unknown if the film will ever get off the ground. Poor del Toro: first Hellboy III goes into development hell, and now this. Since Legendary Pictures also owns the rights to Godzilla and King Kong, however, maybe they should throw some Jaegers into the rumored crossover movie.
