Having directed the first two Avengers movies and created Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joss Whedon would seem like the ideal candidate to helm Captain Marvel. Whedon has confirmed, however, that he will not direct the upcoming film, despite the requests of his fans.

Although Whedon won’t be involved with the project, he did praise Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios for getting a female-driven superhero flick off the ground. “Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get her on the schedule,” Whedon told The Wrap.

Whedon does reportedly have another project in the works with a strong female character at its core. He says that it will follow “a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh*t” with “an original screenplay that is very different from everything [he’s] ever done,” but still “exactly the same.”

Whether Whedon is working on an adaptation or an original idea, we always look forward to seeing what he’ll do next.
