Comic strip icon Garfield is returning to the big screen in a fully animated adventure.

Alcon Entertainment announced that they’ve secured the rights to make a feature-length, CG Garfield movie. They hope that the film will act as the first entry in a potential film franchise.

“I’ve been so impressed with the quality of animation and storytelling coming out of Hollywood of late,” said Creator Jim Davis, who will act as an executive producer on the film. “I can’t wait to get into production with the terrific team Alcon has assembled.”

Garfield previously appeared in two hybrid animated/live-action films with Bill Murray voicing the titular fat cat. As we all know, however, even Murray wasn’t a fan of those movies.

It’s safe to say that Garfield works better in animation than in live-action. Be sure to read our feature on Why Live-Action Versions of Cartoons Are Fortunately Dying Out.
