Warner Bros. has announced that a live-action adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist, the iconic manga and anime series, is in the works.
According to My Anime News Network, the film is aiming for a winter 2017 release. Directed by Fumihiko Sori, it will begin filming in Italy during June and in Japan during August.
With an all Japanese cast, the film will star Ryōsuke Yamada as Edward Elric, Tsubasa Honda as Winry Rockbell, and Dean Fujioka as Roy Mustang.
The first Fullmetal Alchemist anime came out in 2003 and went onto to inspire the 2005 animated feature, Conqueror of Shamballa. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, another anime that remained more faithful to the original manga, came out in 2009. It also inspired a spinoff animated film, The Sacred Star of Milos.
