Kenya Barris, the creator of ABC’s Black-ish, is set to write the screenplay for a Shaft remake according to Hollywood Reporter. Barris will pen the script along with Alex Barnow, who acts as an executive producer on ABC’s The Goldbergs. The film will additionally be produced by John Davis and Ira Napoliello.

The original Shaft from 1971 is of course the definitive Blaxploitation picture. It would go on to inspire a remake with Samuel L. Jackson in 2001. As for who’s going to play Shaft in this remake, we’d like to throw Idris Elba’s name into the hat. Of course since the film has nabbed two talented comedy writers, maybe the new Shaft movie should go into parody mode and enlist Michael Jai White of Black Dynamite.
