Sony has officially announced that an Angry Birds sequel is taking flight.
According to Variety, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is set to come out on September 20, 2019, lining up with the original game’s 10th anniversary. Last year’s feature film adaptation was a solid box office success, grossing over $300 worldwide. Thurop Van Orman (Adventure Time) and John Rice (Rick and Morty) will helm this sequel.
“The Angry Birds Movie took the world by storm last year, creating a whole new legion of fans worldwide,” said Columbia Pictures President Sanford Panitch. “We had an incredible experience working with our friends and creative partners at Rovio, and now we – including our team at Sony Pictures Imageworks – are ready to launch into this next adventure.”
While Angry Bird received mixed reviews from critics, it was still one of the better reviewed video game movies. Plus, it made for some hilarious superhero mashups.
