Woody Allen has made some of the best dramas and comedies ever, such as Manhattan and Annie Hall – and now the 79 year-old will be bringing his trademark wit and charm to the small screen for the very first time. The new series, consisting of half-hour episodes, will be exclusive to Amazon Prime Instant in the US, UK and Germany. This may be the start of Amazon becoming a serious contender to Netflix, who have been hosting a glut of exclusive shows such as House of Cards and the upcoming four Marvel shows (although Amazon’s Transparent did just pick up two awards at the very recent Golden Globes ceremony). While details about the story and casting have yet to be released, Amazon Studios Vice President Roy Price said of the news, via Yahoo, ‘Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series… From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.’ Allen, who will be both writing and directing the series, also weighed in with his own statement: ‘I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.’ The untitled Woody Allen project will most likely receive an air date sometime in 2016.
