Gone Girl was one of last year’s biggest talking-point movies, and did extremely well at both the box office and with critics. And now director David Fincher is moving ahead with his next cinematic project: Strangers. Essentially a remake, or re-envisioning, of the 1951 Alfred Hitchcock classic Strangers on a TrainStrangers will see Affleck play a Hollywood actor who is currently on an Oscar campaign (sounds just like Affleck today) who, when his private jet brakes down and is offered a flight by a wealthy stranger, is offered a deal – in return for Affleck bumping off his benefactor’s father. The action is transposed from the original’s train (admittedly, a less modern form of transport) – but we’re excited to see how Fincher will tackle such a classic tale of murder and morality, as the project seems right up his street. Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl and its screenwriter, also seems to be a good fit for Fincher’s sensibilities at the moment, while Affleck will surely continue his streak of cinematic gold that restarted with Gone Baby Gone. But we’re most interested in who will play the wealthy stranger: when that particular bit of casting is announced, then it’ll be time to get properly invested in this already tantalising project.
