Kate Beckinsale is confirmed to return for the fifth instalment of the Underworld franchise, reprising her role of Selene, the vampire with a conscience.

Also signing up is director Anne Foerster, who has worked extensive with Roland Emmerich as Director of Photography on such action hits as The Day after Tomorrow and White House Down. Foerster becomes the first woman to helm a movie in the series, which began in 2003. Len Wiseman directed the first and second parts of the series that stars his wife.

Beckinsale took a break from the character in 2009, and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans went ahead without her. Rhona Mitra took the lead playing a different character in a prequel.

Selene was back for Underworld: Awakening, and Beckinsale’s co-star Theo James is also in line to return for the next film. He will have to squeeze in the project in his schedule alongside more sequels in the Insurgent franchise.

THR report that the film will begin production later this year in Prague.
