Dunkirk dominates box office, Valerian flops

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk had an impressive debut at the box office, while Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets disappointed.

Dunkirk has received huge praise from critics and audiences, and so it’s no surprise to see it conquer the US box office in its first weekend. It saw off competition from Girls Trip, to take top spot with a $51 million domestic opening. Valerian came in at fifth, with $17 million, which is poor in comparison to its massive $210 million budget.

Dunkirk also impressed overseas, with a strong $12 million opening in the UK and $106 million in total worldwide. And it’s Nolan’s fourth highest-grossing debut at the US box office, ahead of his previous endeavour Interstellar. See the top 5 below:
