Christopher Nolan and James Cameron against $50 Home Movie Service

The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has announced his disapproval at the concept of a $50 home movie service.

“It would be hard to express the great importance of exclusive theatrical presentation to our industry more compellingly than Jon Landau and James Cameron did,” Nolan said in a statement via THR.

Sean Parker’s proposed $50 at-home movie service called The Screening Room does have some big name filmmakers in support of the idea though including the likes of J.J. Abrams and Peter Jackson. The Hobbit director supports the service because it proposes to share revenue with theaters, and it will also be aimed at consumers who don’t go to the movies.

But James Cameron disagrees as he recently said it would be “disastrous” for cinemas and the movie business. And both Roland Emmerich and Brett Ratner also voiced their objections. “I said it in 2011 and it’s even more true now, I’m a firm believer in the importance of protecting the theatrical window,” said Ratner.

Cameron’s producing partner Landau told THR “I’m surprised this is something that the industry in general would want to support. If this happens, I personally think it would be disastrous for theaters. And if they can’t survive, then we will have no venue.”

Horror director M. Night Shyamalan is also in the opposing camp as he tweeted that he “is completely against the Screening Room. Film is one of our last communal art forms.” he went onto add, “once filmmakers and theater owners open the door to this idea, there is no going back. The movie going experience is something to fight for!”
