American Sniper star Bradley Cooper is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to make his directorial debut with the long-gestating remake of A Star is Born.

According to a report from Deadline, once the star has signed on for directing duties, he will also take on a role in the film. Beyonce is still wanted for the female lead, and has been attached for some time to the project.

Cooper will step into the seat that Clint Eastwood has vacated, with the pair having combined for American Sniper last year, and in the process smashing records with the highest grossing domestic release of 2014 in the U.S. The actor is currently on Boadway in a production of The Elephant Man, which will be coming to London in a few months time.

A Star is Born was first made in 1937, with a second version arriving in 1954. The most recent incarnation was released in 1976 and featured Barbara Streisand opposite Kris Kristofferson. Most of Hollywood’s A-List acting talent have been talked about for the male lead, with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith and Tom Cruise in the frame at various points.
