According to advance US ticket sales, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is on course to become the first $1bn movie of the year.

Deadline reports that Zack Snyder’s superhero adventure is outpacing films in terms of upfront receipts such as The Dark Knight RisesThe Avengers, and 2015’s Fast & Furious 7. And as all three movies made a minimum of $1bn worldwide, it’s looking like Batman v Superman will do the same, if not more.

It’s already reportedly posted advance US sales of $20m-$25m, and if it carries on in such a way, it would easily make it onto the list of the top 15 openings of all time.

The only thing stopping the film from reaching such financial success are poor reviews. Snyder’s previous superhero film, Man of Steel, stalled on $668m at the global box office after receiving mixed opinions from critics.

The highest-grossing movie of the year so far is Marvel’s Deadpool, which has taken $708m, but with the way things are going, we can expect Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to overtake.
