Tom Cruise Will Return in Jack Reacher Sequel

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that a Jack Reacher sequel is in the works and Tom Cruise will return to play the title character. This followup to the 2012 film will begin filming in November with Edward Zwick of Blood Diamond co-writing and directing.

While the original Jack Reacher wasn’t a runaway success, it did perform modestly well at the domestic box office and overseas. The real reason this sequel likely got the go-ahead, though, is because Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation has been the number one movie in America two weeks in a row. Considering that several of Tom Cruise’s most recent films haven’t been huge box office hits, Rogue Nation and 2011’s Ghost Protocol have helped to reaffirm his ability to sell a movie. Of course his star power alone isn’t why the last two Mission Impossible flicks have been successes. It’s because they were really well-constructed movies. Hopefully we’ll be able to say the same thing about Jack Reacher 2, which is said to be based on Lee Child’s novel, Never Go Back.
