Sony pushing forward Venom film; release date set

It looks like the infamous Symbiote is set for another appearance as part of Sony’s Spider-Man cannon with details emerging yesterday that the studio is moving forward with a stand-alone Venom film and release date is already set.

The Wrap reports that Sony has set a release date of October 5th, 2018 for the spin-off film but that the film will apparently not be part of the Tom Holland Spider-Man reboot that is paired with Marvel and their MCU. The report suggests that the new film is “being envisioned as a franchise apart from and unrelated to the upcoming Spider-Man movie in the works with actor Tom Holland.”

The report also says that Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, who have produced the Spider-Man series for Sony thus far, are on board the new project, as are Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) who are writing the script. Edge of Tomorrow scribe Dante Harper wrote a previous draft also. (via ComingSoon.net)

An earlier report had Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote The Amazing Spider-Man 2, attached but that has since been debunked.

What shape this spin-off film, or indeed franchise, will take remains to be seen particularly if the films don’t “attach” themselves to the Tom Holland/Spider-Man outings. Does the character have the necessary fan-base to carry its franchise without our friendly neighbourhood web-slinger? Perhaps not, but the studio has been trying to get this film off the ground for a while.

The character made his first big-screen appearance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 in 2007, where it as insisted that he be included in an already cluttered movie but it backfired dramatically. Perhaps enough time has now passed for Venom to get the appearance, and indeed the film, that he deserves.

Venom is scheduled for release on October 5th, 2018
