Sony’s TriStar Pictures to Release Trainspotting Sequel

The long-awaited sequel to 1996’s Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, is to be produced and distributed by Sony’s TriStar Pictures, who have secured the rights to the film. Boyle will return in the director’s chair, alongside the original movie’s cast, which includes Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle; although Kelly MacDonald, who portrayed Diane, is yet to be confirmed.

Boyle said in a statement:

“It’s been 20 years since we met these characters and John Hodge’s screenplay brilliantly explores what’s happened to them – and to us – in the intervening years… we can’t wait to get going.”

We also can’t wait, but Boyle recently admitted (when talking to the BBC at the London premiere of his latest film, Steve Jobs) that creating a sequel to the classic that is Trainspotting is a daunting task, because he fears he will be “absolutely crucified” if it is a bad film.

Production is scheduled to get underway in spring of next year, with a targeted 2017 release.
