Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows tops box office

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows topped the domestic box office this weekend, although it didn’t bring in as much green as the studio likely hoped.

According to Box Office Mojo, the sequel to the 2014 hit made an estimated $35.25 million. While not a bad start, it is a bit of a disappointment when compared to its predecessor, which had a $65.5 million opening. At this rate, the film will probably only make $90 million domestically on a $135 million budget.

X-Men: Apocalypse fell to second with $22.3 million and is predicted to finish with $160-165 million domestically. The latest X-Men film fared better internationally, taking in $84.4 million over the weekend.

Me Before You opened in third with $18.27 million domestically. Not bad for a film that only cost $20 million to make. The same can’t be said about Alice Through the Looking Glass, which fell to fourth with $10.69 million. It will need to perform really well overseas to surpass its $170 million budget.

Despite receiving mostly positive reviews, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping only opened at #8 with $4.63 million. With any luck, good word of mouth will help the film to hang in there and surpass its estimated $20 million budget.
