Star Wars R2-D2 actor, Kenny Baker, dies aged 81

Today brings the sad news that Kenny Baker, the actor who played R2-D2 in six Star Wars movies, has died at the age of 81. His niece, Abigail Shield, has confirmed the news, saying that it comes following a long illness.

Baker, who was born in Birmingham, first came to fame for his performance as R2-D2 in 1977’s original Star Wars film. Other appearances included roles in Flash Gordon and Time Bandits. Although he didn’t appear in The Force Awakens, having been restricted to a wheelchair by the time of the newest Star Wars film’s release, he was credited as a consultant.
