Script for Star Wars: Episode VIII is Finished

J.J. Abrams has confirmed in a Wired interview that the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VIII is finished. The follow-up to The Force Awakens was scripted by Rian Johnson, who will also be directing Episode VIII.

“I’m sure rewrites are going to be endless, like they always are,” said Abrams. “But what [Lawrence Kasdan] and I did was set up certain key relationships, certain key questions, conflicts. And we knew where certain things were going.”

Abrams went on to say, “Rian has asked for a couple of things here and there that he needs for his story. He is an incredibly accomplished filmmaker and an incredibly strong writer. So the story he told took what we were doing and went in the direction that he felt was best, but that is very much in line with what we were thinking as well.” Abrams also noted that Episode VIII will be Johnson’s movie and he will “do it in the way he sees fit.”

Seeing how we don’t even know much about the plot for The Force Awakens, there’s still no word on what exactly Johnson has in store for us in Episode VIII. What we do know, however, is that the sequel will hit theaters on May 26, 2017.
