Rumor: Christopher Nolan Involved in Akira Trilogy?
A live-action version of Akira has been in development hell for years. It isn’t surprising that it’s taken so long for the project to get off the ground considering how groundbreaking the 1988 anime remains. It’d take a true visionary filmmaker and master storyteller to do such an adaptation justice. Warner Bros. just might have finally found the right man for the job, however.
Den of Geek reports that WB is planning an Akira trilogy and is looking to rope in Christopher Nolan to oversee the films. Warner Bros. and Nolan of course previously collaborated on The Dark Knight trilogy, which made over two billion dollars worldwide combined. While only a rumor, sources say Nolan has met with an unidentified filmmaker previously attached to the project.
Akira will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s company Appian Way, along with Andrew Lazar and Mad Chance. Marco J. Ramirez, the showrunner for season two of Daredevil, is writing the screenplay. It was recently announced that Nolan’s next feature film is set to come out in July, 2017. One can’t help but wonder if the first entry in the Akira trilogy is the untitled project that’s been kept under wraps.
If there’s any truth to these rumors, the live-action Akira is starting to sound incredibly promising. If only Nolan could’ve worked on the live-action versions of Dragon Ball Z and The Last Airbender.
