Oscar-winning Moonlight star confirmed for True Detective Season 3

The third season of True Detective is officially moving forward with a recent Oscar-winner.

According to Deadline, HBO’s President of Programming Casey Bloys confirmed that Mahershala Ali will star in the crime anthology’s next season.

“I have read five scripts for a third season and I think they’re terrific,” Bloys said during the Television Critics Association press tour. “I didn’t oversee Season 2, I know they talked about perhaps it was rushed into production, but I can tell you we’re taking our time with the scripts … We’re taking our time, and I think it’s paid off, because again, the scripts are really, really good.”

Ali broke out as an actor to watch in House of Cards. This paved the way for his acclaimed role in Moonlight, for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award.

Where the first season of True Detective was met with almost universal acclaim, Season 2 was generally viewed as a major downgrade. There were even reports that HBO might not even pursue a third season as a result. However, it appears Ali just might save the franchise.
