Mamma Mia! sequel in the works

Universal has announced a sequel to the 2008 musical, Mamma Mia! The Movie.

According to Deadline, the original cast is likely to return for this followup, which will be appropriately titled, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! There’s still no official word if Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, or Pierce Brosnan are back on-board. However, Ol Parker of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will write and direct the project. We can also expect to hear plenty of songs from ABBA, who made up the first film’s jukebox soundtrack.

Hitting the scene ten years ago, the original Mamma Mia! became the highest-grossing live-action musical of all time, although that record was recently broken by Bill Condon’s take on Beauty and the Beast. The stage show that started it all initially premiered in 1999 and made it to Broadway two years later. The Broadway production closed in 2015, which might explain why this theatrical sequel just got the green light. The question is if the film will be another Grease 2 or… huh, are there any good musical sequels?
