Jon Favreau Can’t Imagine Iron Man Without Robert Downey Jr.

As far as Jon Favreau is concerned, Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man.

The director of the first two Iron Man films recently spoke with IGN and discussed how hard it would be to replace Downey Jr. in this iconic role.

“I can’t imagine how they could but that doesn’t mean that they can’t. I just can’t wrap my head around that one,” said Favreau. “To me he’s the one element that has unified all of it, and I think kept a consistent tone, and the integrity of his acting ability and his talent really works wonderfully synergistically with the Marvel universe. I think that his personality is something which helps define it. That being said, nothing would surprise me, but for me it would be a hard pill to swallow and big shoes to fill.”

We can certainly see where Favreau is coming from. Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark is largely what made Iron Man such a big hit and thus launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Oscar-nominated actor will reprise his role for the sixth time in Captain America: Civil War and is also set to appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Of course the sad truth is that Downey Jr. can’t play Iron Man forever, even if the MCU never comes to an end. But who could possibly fill his suit?
