Hook prequel could be on the way thanks to Kickstarter campaign

Original star launches campaign for Hook prequel…

Who doesn’t love Hook? While the film wasn’t perhaps as successful as many had hoped back in 1991 (though it did gross over $300million worldwide), the film has become a classic over the years through home entertainment sales and new screenings that have seen different generations enjoy it. Now it seems we may be getting a prequel of sorts thanks to a new Kickstarter campaign (via TheWrap).

Star Dante Basco, who played Rufio on the film, has started the campaign which could see either a new short or feature film about the character. Called “Bangarang”, the project would take place before Neverland and the arrival of Peter Pan with the official synopsis stating:

“…the story about Rufio, before the mohawk, before Neverland, before he was The Pan.”

“Roofus is a 13-year-old kid who is destined to be more than he is… After his mother is forced to put him into a foster home, he and his rag-tag group of best friends – a Jamaican boy named Julani and a bright-eyed Latina force of nature named Ella – find a way for Roofus to escape his ill fate, find his happy thought and fulfill his destiny.”

The film’s goal is $30,000 and at the time of writing it had reached over $17,300. That said, a feature-length film would be made should the campaign reach $200,000. Jonah Feingold will direct and co-write with Jeremy Dylan, who is also a producer.

Released in 1991, Hook was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Robin Williams (Peter Pan/Peter Banning), Dustin Hoffman (Captain Hook), Julia Roberts (Tinker-Bell), Bob Hoskins (Smee) and Maggie Smith (Wendy Darling).
