Flickreel’s Five Films You Can’t Miss in September

Nobody likes the Autumn, but at least it means we can go to the cinema with slightly less guilt knowing it’s not lovely and sunny outdoors. Though if you’re reading this in Britain – fair to say that’s not a guilt felt very often. So, if you do decide to settle in to comfy seat in a dark room near you – here’s what’s best to see this month…

God’s Own Country

Now this might not be as easy to track down at your local cinema, but if you can find a way to indulge in Francis Lee’s directorial debut, you really ought to. It’s a moving, beautiful romantic tale set on a farm in the North of England, of two young men who fall in love. It studies the relationships we share with those around us, and the land in which we inhabit. It’s hard to find many flaws with this feature, unless, well, you’re a vegan.

Wind River

Having seen Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen team up before in the MCU, now comes a much more subtle turn for the actors – collaborating yet again in Taylor Sheridan’s sophomore directorial outing, Wind River. On scriptwriting duties too, needless to say we’re dealing with a compelling narrative (Sheridan did write Sicario and Hell or High Water, after all) – of an FBI agent investigating a murder on the unforgiving, snowy landscape. A film that will make you feel cold in more ways than one – but don’t let that put you off.

Mother!

Darren Aronofsky has so often managed to find the horror in reality, presenting realistic, gritty tales that thrive in the darker, bleaker aspects of life, terrifying without having to resort to the archetypal ‘things go bump in the night’ device. Well, now it seems things are going bump in the night, as Mother! – starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem tells the story of a couple who find uninvited guests at their home. Another light-hearted comedy it seems from this immensely talented filmmaker.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Now, we’re not ones for superfluous reboots, remakes, sequels and prequels – but after Kingsman: The Secret Service, even we wanted more. And more is what we’re being served, and thankfully, Matthew Vaughn remains at the help and Jane Goldman has provided the screenplay. Instead, it’s the cast where we see changes, for Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore join the already stellar cast – and let’s face it, that’s not exactly a bad sign. Even Vinnie Jones has joined in the fun. Okay, well maybe that’s a bad sign…

Borg vs McEnroe

We all love a good sporting rivalry, whether they be fictional (Rocky/Apollo Creed) or non-fictional (James Hunt/Niki Lauda) – they’re easy to invest in on the silver screen. So with that in mind, there should be plenty to look forward to when we see the famous rivalry between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe unfold, with Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf cast, respectively. McEnroe once said, ‘my greatest strength is that I have no weaknesses’ – let’s just the hope film follows suit.
