Flickreel’s 10 Films You Can’t Miss in June 2017

As we move further away from the award’s season, we seem to have found ourselves now entering into the blockbuster one, as producers around the world have to persuade film fans to forget about the sun shining outdoors and go spend some time in the cinema. But with this list of June releases, that shouldn’t be too hard a task – so let’s run through the 10 films you don’t want to miss this month.

Churchill

Ah, Winston Churchill. The man who won a World War with a glass of whisky in his hand. And now, he has his own biopic too – with the ever-impressive Brian Cox taking on the role in this unrelenting thriller.

Wonder Woman

While Batman, Superman and the entire Suicide Squad collective endured a rather disappointing year – thankfully Gal Gadot is on hand to bring DC back some credibility, fusing ancient folklore with the horrors of the Second World War.

The Mummy

On the surface, this is another of those remakes that really doesn’t need to exist. But then, who can really say no to a Tom Cruise starring, fantasy blockbuster steeped in Ancient Egyptian mythology? We can’t.

Cars 3

This Pixar franchise may not have that same accessible appeal to children and their parents that the vast majority of their other properties do, but it’s still a new Pixar movie, and therefore it still has a place on our list.

The Book of Henry

Somewhere in between Jurassic World and Stars Wars: Episode IX – director Colin Trevorrow has been busy making The Book of Henry, starring Naomi Watts and Jacob Tremblay. Following the terrific indie Safety Not Guaranteed, it’s a joy to see the filmmaker going back to his roots.

Rough Night

Scarlett Johansson stars in this Lucia Aniello comedy that tells the tale of a group of women on a wild bachelorette party, who find themselves with a dead stripper on their hands. We’ve had rough nights before, but none of this magnitude.

Transformers: The Last Knight

There’s a reason why the Transformers franchise is still going strong – now into its fifth instalment – and that’s because we love them and keep paying to see them. Michael Bay is back in the director’s chair; Mark Wahlberg is back on screen. People are gonna go see this one as well, aren’t they?

Baby Driver

The last time British director Edgar Wright stepped out of his Cornetto trilogy to make a movie, it resulted in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Now he’s back with Baby Driver, boasting a cast consisting of Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx. No room for Simon Pegg or Nick Frost, but we can’t imagine they’ll be missed with that line-up.

Despicable Me 3

Gru is back (yay!) and this time, his twin brother Dru is around. With Steve Carell lending his indelible vocals to both roles, to be completely honest, we’re just really pleased to see the Minions back on screen. Gotta get our fix somehow.

The Beguiled

Before we all get bored of Nicole Kidman – who seems to have a million films coming out this year – let’s enjoy one of the first, as she stars in Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled. Based on the Thomas Cullinan novel, the film also stars Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning, taking place at a girl’s school during the Civil War.
