Don’t Breathe tops weekend box office again

Fede Alvarez’s horror thriller Don’t Breathe has topped the US box office for the second time in a row over a slow Labor Day weekend. It pulled in an estimated $15,700,000, ahead of Suicide Squad‘s $10,005,000 and Pete’s Dragon‘s $6,471,000. When considering that Don’t Breathe‘s production budget was a mere $9.9 million, that’s pretty good going – especially considering that its worldwide cume is now at $59,723,952. Although this kind of return vs budget isn’t uncommon for horror movies.

Suicide Squad‘s continued ability to pull in audiences is perhaps the bigger talking point, though. Having received generally negative reviews (apart for our own, which was quite positive interestingly) and a pretty average B+ CinemaScore. Perhaps it’s all the controversy surrounding it, or not such strong competition, which is helping its performance. Anyhow, it now ranks as the 15th highest grossing superhero release of all-time domestically, ahead of Man of Steel‘s $291,045,518. It now has a worldwide cume of $672,922,209 and will open in Japan this coming weekend.
