Box Office: Lego Batman still No.1; The Great Wall tops new releases

After topping the charts last week, The Lego Batman Movie maintains its impressive start to its US box office run by retaining the No.1 spot for a second week, holding off all three newcomers this week (via Box Office Mojo).

Grossing an estimated $34.2million for the three-day weekend, Lego Batman dropped just 35.4% from its opening weekend and now stands at $98.7million with the $100million mark just a day away – indeed it has now topped $72million internationally and its worldwide total is now over $170milion with much more still to come (it opens in China in two weeks).

Fifty Shades Darker has to settle for 2nd place again, grossing $20.9million for the three-day and now stands at almost $90million domestically. Internationally however the film is the leader and brought in another $43.7million over the weekend and its worldwide total stands at $276.9million.

Of the new releases it was Matt Damon’s The Great Wall which placed highest, landing at No.3 with an estimated $18.1million. Perhaps not the greatest opening for the $150million budgeted actioner, but so far the film has grossed $262.7million worldwide and looks set to $300million very soon.

John Wick: Chapter Two dropped one place to No.4 with around $16.5million for the three-day as its domestic takings now stand at $58.6million ($15million more than the entire run of the first film) after ten days of release with many international markets still to come to add to its impressive $90million worldwide grosses.

Comedy Fist Fight, the second of the new releases, opened to around $12million which was below early estimates and may have to settle for a domestic gross of around $30million. Finally, Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness rounds out the top 10 with an estimated $4.2million on its debut – estimates pegged this one as a low opening and so it proved with another $4.5million grossed internationally.

Finally, Hidden Figures and La La Land continuing their hugely impressive runs in the lead-up to the Academy Awards next weekend. Figures now stands at $140million and is the highest-grossing domestic Best Picture Nominee and it’s worldwide total stands at $163.9million after it expanded internationally over recent weeks.

La La Land added $4.5million this weekend to now stand at $133.5million domestically, but it’s the worldwide performance that is most impressive with the musical now standing at a massive $340.1million. The film is the odds-on favourite to win Best Picture at next Sunday’s Oscar ceremony.
