Are we finally getting Gremlins 3?

Chris Columbus just confirmed that he’s written a script for Gremlins 3 and it’s apparently pretty out there. Speaking with SlashFilm, Columbus stated, “I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see.”

“It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”

The original Gremlins was a surprise hit back in 1984. 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch didn’t perform as well with critics or audiences, but it’s since developed a cult following. With the recent nostalgia craze, it’s no surprise that Gremlins 3 is moving forward. Of course several questions still remain: Will director Joe Dante return? Will the film rely more on practical effects or CGI this time around? When will it finally hit theaters?
